What age should I start my child at school?
Most families send their child to school at 5 years of age. Most prep (Foundation) students will turn 6 throughout their first year of school. You might need to consider the month that your child is born to help you determine when to start school for your child.

Is 4 too young to start school?
Probably.
In Victorian government schools, to start primary school in 2024, your child will need to turn 5 years old by 30 April 2024. As your 4-year-old turns 5, the other children in the class will be turning 6. A year can make a big developmental and social difference at 6, so this decision should be made carefully. Consulting with your kindergarten teacher is a great place to start. If your child is academically advanced or is in need of stimulation and engagement it is worth considering all of your options including school or another year of kindergarten with additional activities.
The difference in cognitive and social development of 4 and 6 year olds is significant. Your 4 year old will get tired compared to a 6 year old.

What should I be looking for on a school tour?
My first instinct is to get a feel for the culture of the school. School will take up a large piece of your family life so ensuring your values align with the school is a great first step. Does the school feel welcoming and inclusive? Do the students and teachers seem happy and engaged? Are they invested in and welcome community involvement? Once you have a feel for the school/s you like, then you should look to see what additional programs that suit your family such as advanced or support programs, kitchen gardens, after school or lunch clubs, musical or art programs.

What questions should I ask on a school tour
I always like to find out how many prep classes will run, and what the class sizes will be. I would also enquire about:
Will there be additional support staff?
Do their specialist classes start straight away?
Do you have before and after school care? Is it on site?
Do you run a buddy program?
What supports are in place for prep students at lunchtime?
